A Necessary Change



Global dependence on plastics has generated an unprecedented environmental crisis. Conventional plastics, derived from petroleum, not only consume non-renewable resources, but also take centuries to degrade, polluting our oceans and affecting the health of wildlife. In response to this problem, the European project seeks to replace traditional plastics in packaging, cosmetics and food applications with sustainable and biodegradable biomaterials such as Bacterial Nanocellulose (NCB).

Innovations in Bacterial Nanocellulose (NCB) Encapsulation



The project not only focuses on the knowledge of  sustainable Bacterial Nanocellulose (NCB) but also on its advanced functionality. Through the development of micro and nano encapsulation, new Bacterial Nanocellulose (NCB) capsules are created  for various purposes:



  • Fragrances and Essential Oils: These capsules are designed to release aromas in a controlled manner, maintaining antimicrobial and antioxidant effects that are compatible with cosmetic formulations.


  • Microorganisms and Enzymatic Extracts: The encapsulation of microorganisms improves their viability in formulation processes and their enzymatic activity, inhibiting denaturation and ensuring their effectiveness in applications such as biofertilizers and biostimulants.



Practical Applications of Encapsulated Bacterial Nanocellulose Biomaterials



Micro and nanoencapsulated biomaterials have a wide range of practical applications that seek to replace plastics and chemical compounds currently in use:


  • Cosmetics and Personal Care Products: Formulations with Bacterial Nanocellulose (NCB) capsules are developed,  replacing traditional plastic capsules. In addition to extending the shelf life of products, they also reduce the need for preservatives and other additives.

Compostable Bacterial Nanocellulose (NCB) Nanocomposites and Flexible Films



One of the most promising applications of Bacterial Nanocellulose (NCB) is the development of nanocomposites for compostable flexible films. These films, designed for domestic use in packaging applications, promote the use of sustainable biomaterials and offer a viable alternative to single-use plastics. As they are compostable, they contribute to the reduction of plastic waste and promote a circular economy.

Promising Results and Future Developments



The results of the project have been highly promising. The importance of Bacterial Nanocellulose (NCB) from wheat straw has been validated  , reaching a quality comparable to commercial options. In addition, the derivatization of this has improved its solubility in water, allowing its use in the encapsulation of active substances such as fragrances, microorganisms and enzymes.



This Bacterial Nanocellulose (NCB) has also been used to manufacture compostable agricultural films, which have been functionalized to optimize their compatibility with different polymeric matrices and improve the dispersion of the components.
